Doriano Navarra presents the exhibition Faith by American artist Matt McCormick, from July 13 to October 6, 2024, at Villa Navarra. Through this exhibition, McCormick explores the profound ramifications of our digital age, highlighting the subtle yet powerful influence of algorithms on our beliefs and attitudes.

Faith invites viewers on an introspective journey, much like a rabbit hole, in which they will discover «strange, unexpected, and sometimes dark places» (Chris Black). McCormick highlights how social media platforms, by organizing our news feeds based on our past interactions, can transform our worldviews and even our ideological stances.
McCormick's works are varied and expressive, including pencil drawings on aged pastel, canvas paintings, aluminum object castings, and an installation reconstructing a life-size log cabin. Each of these pieces tells a unique story, often autobiographical, but never confessional. They evoke important American references such as the punk bands The Misfits and The Ramones, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the movie Midnight Cowboy. A loop video of Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival, famous for its use in Apocalypse Now, accompany the works, adding a sound dimension that resonates with the theme of the exhibition.
Faith poses a fundamental question: what is the nature of the information we engage with and how does it shape our ideals, political tendencies, and social preferences? In a world where technology dominates, this question becomes crucial. For McCormick, understanding this influence is essential to maintaining individuality and critical thinking in the face of ubiquitous digital influence.
« I aim to highlight the power of the media in constructing ideological landscapes and the profound impact this has on individual and collective consciousness. [...] It is more than a work of art, it is a commentary on the narratives that shape our understanding of reality. It challenges us to question how our own beliefs have been influenced and reminds us of the fine line between skepticism and paranoia, patriotism and radicalism. »(Matt McCormick)
Faith by Matt McCormick promises to be a profound visual and intellectual experience, prompting every visitor to reflect on the impact of technology on their own lives and on the power and responsibility of the narratives we consume.
