Esther Mahlangu was born on November 11, 1935, near Middelburg, in what is now Mpumalanga province, South Africa. She is one of the foremost African artists of her time. She is moreover the international ambassador of Ndebele painting.
The eldest of nine children, she learned to paint at ten from her mother and grandmother. Indeed, this tradition is handed down from woman to woman. Among the Southern Ndebele, women decorate the walls of their homes with large geometric patterns. Their bright colors, outlined in black, affirm the identity of the household and the community. Mahlangu thus mastered this demanding art early on. She executes it freehand, without sketches or rulers. Originally, she used natural pigments and a brush made of chicken feathers.
From 1980 to 1991, she worked at the Botshabelo open-air museum, bringing this culture to a wider audience. French researchers then noticed her work. In 1989, she was invited to Magiciens de la Terre, the landmark exhibition at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette. In front of thousands of visitors, she painted a life-size replica of her house. It was the start of an international career.
In 1991, she became the first woman and the first non-Western artist to design a BMW Art Car. This 525i was entirely covered in Ndebele patterns. It thus joined a series launched by Calder, Stella, Lichtenstein and Warhol. Commissions soon multiplied. She painted a five-story mural for the Johannesburg Civic Theatre (1992) and British Airways tail fins (1997). A Fiat 500 (2007), collaborations with Belvedere and Eytys, and the interior of a Rolls-Royce Phantom (2020) followed. In 2024 came the BMW i5 Flow Nostokana.
By transposing mural patterns onto canvas, Esther Mahlangu brought this tradition into contemporary art. Her hand is remarkably precise. It combines geometric rigor and freedom, ancestral heritage and modernity. Her compositions have often been compared to Western abstraction. Yet her work remains deeply rooted in her culture. She is committed to passing it on to younger generations through her school.
Exhibited worldwide, Esther Mahlangu had her first solo exhibition in 1994, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. In 2024, the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town held a major retrospective of her work. She also received the Order of Ikhamanga in 2006 and several honorary doctorates. Finally, in 2024, she was made an Officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
In 2023, Galerie 75 Faubourg in Paris presented The Breath of Calligraphy, together with Galerie Enrico Navarra. The exhibition brought together acrylics on canvas made between 2010 and 2022.
The 75 Faubourg and Enrico Navarra galleries present the exhibition The Breath of Calligraphy by South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu, featuring a selection of acrylics on canvas created between 2010 and 2022. These works refer to the painter’s Ndebele heritage and celebrate «the contemplation of space and color, both omnipresent and intense: a calligraphy unique to Africa. [...] She [Mahlangu] shares with us the clear story of a life, translated through geometry and color into the language of art.” (Ruzy Rusike, exhibition booklet)
