Doriano Navarra présente l’exposition Faith de l’artiste américain Matt McCormick, du 13 juillet au 6 octobre 2024 à la Villa Navarra. À travers cette exposition, McCormick explore les ramifications profondes de notre ère numérique, mettant en lumière l’influence subtile mais puissante des algorithmes sur nos croyances et nos attitudes.
Faith invite les spectateurs à un voyage introspectif, semblable à un terrier de lapin, dans lequel ils découvriront « des endroits étranges, inattendus et parfois sombres » (Chris Black). McCormick met en évidence comment les plateformes de médias sociaux, en organisant nos fils d’actualité selon nos interactions passées, peuvent transformer nos visions du monde et même nos positions idéologiques.
Les œuvres de McCormick sont variées et expressives, comprenant des dessins au crayon sur pastel vieilli, des peintures sur toile, des moulages d’objets en aluminium, et une installation reconstituant une cabane en bois grandeur nature. Chacune de ces pièces raconte une histoire unique, souvent autobiographique, mais jamais confessionnelle. Elles évoquent des références américaines importantes telles les groupes punk The Misfits et The Ramones, l’assassinat de John F. Kennedy et le film Macadam Cowboy. Une vidéo en boucle de Fortunate Son de Creedence Clearwater Revival, célèbre pour son utilisation dans Apocalypse Now, accompagne les œuvres, ajoutant une dimension sonore qui résonne avec le thème de l’exposition.
Faith pose une question fondamentale : quelle est la nature de l’information avec laquelle nous nous engageons et comment façonne-t-elle nos idéaux, nos tendances politiques et nos préférences sociales ? Dans un monde où la technologie domine, cette question devient cruciale. Pour McCormick, comprendre cette influence est essentiel pour maintenir l’individualité et la pensée critique face à une influence numérique omniprésente.
« Je vise à mettre en évidence le pouvoir des médias dans la construction de paysages idéologiques et l’impact profond que cela a sur la conscience individuelle et collective. […] C’est plus qu’une œuvre d’art, c’est un commentaire sur les récits qui façonnent notre compréhension de la réalité. Il nous met au défi de nous interroger sur la façon dont nos propres croyances ont été influencées et nous rappelle la mince ligne entre scepticisme et paranoïa, patriotisme et radicalisme. » (Matt McCormick)
