Ces Ćuvres font reÌfeÌrence aÌ lâheÌritage Ndebele de la peintre et ceÌleÌbrent « la contemplation de lâespace et de la couleur, aÌ la fois omnipreÌsente et intense : une calligraphie propre aÌ lâAfrique. Dans la communautĂ© Ndebele, la tradition de la peinture murale dĂ©corative est un art sĂ©culaire rĂ©servĂ© aux femmes, avec des techniques transmises de mĂšre en fille, et rĂ©alisĂ© sur les façades des maisons lors de cĂ©rĂ©monies rituelles. DĂšs son plus jeune Ăąge, Esther Mahlangu a ainsi appris Ă fabriquer les pigments, Ă prĂ©parer la surface Ă peindre comme Ă crĂ©er des compositions dĂ©coratives mĂȘlant figures gĂ©omĂ©triques traditionnelles et motifs inventĂ©s.
Dr. Mahlangu rĂ©volutionne cet art traditionnel Ă travers lâutilisation de nouvelles techniques. Elle est ainsi la premiĂšre Ă transfĂ©rer cette pratique picturale sur des toiles et autres mĂ©diums contemporains, et a remplacĂ© les pigments naturels par des peintures acryliques encore plus vives et contrastĂ©es. Utilisant une plume, elle peint Ă main levĂ©e sans esquisse prĂ©alable, sur des formats et supports divers et variĂ©s : des toiles, des murs, des cĂ©ramiques, des voitures (BMW Art Car Collection, 1991), des motos ou des baskets (Eytys, 2015).
Dans les annĂ©es 1980, alors quâelle rĂ©alisait une crĂ©ation en plein air au musĂ©e du village de Botshabelo (Province dâOrange, Afrique du Sud), elle rencontre le galeriste français AndrĂ© Magnin, qui lâinvite Ă lâexposition Les Magiciens de la Terre (1989) au Centre Pompidou, vĂ©ritable tournant dans sa carriĂšre, la propulsant sur la scĂšne française et europĂ©enne.
AprĂšs de nombreuses expositions Ă travers le monde, ses Ćuvres ont rejoint des collections privĂ©es (Larry Warsh, Jean Pigozzi, Oprah Winfrey, Usher, John Legend, David Bowie, Alicia KeysâŠ) et publiques majeures (Centre Georges Pompidou Ă Paris, Hirshhorn Museum Ă Washington D.C., Brooklyn Museum Ă New York, Iziko South African National Gallery Ă Cape TownâŠ). En 2024, une rĂ©trospective sera consacrĂ©e Ă son Ćuvre Ă la Iziko South African National Gallery en 2024 avant de voyager dans plusieurs musĂ©es prestigieux dans le monde.
L’exposition est organisĂ©e en collaboration avec Almine Rech qui prĂ©sentera concomitamment des Ćuvres du Dr. Esther Mahlangu dans son showroom parisien rue de Turenne, et une exposition personnelle dans sa galerie londonienne.
